I sensed your storm,

Heard the distant rumbling and

Smelled the metallic air

long before I saw

your destructive clouds.

But I ignored the signs,

Opting to believe you were

Just a moody, overcast sky

When I should have

Run.

It’s too late now.

Your harmless appearance

Tricked me, like a rabid animal

Only displaying friendliness so

you could get close enough

To bite me.

When the first raindrops hit

my forehead and shoulders

Like stray gunshots, I knew

it wouldn’t be long before

I was pelted with cold bullets.

I searched for shelter but

I was out in the open,

A lightning rod meant to

Take the brunt of

your unpredictability.

As the rain poured harder

And wind whipped around me,

I was helpless, vulnerable to

The elements you wanted

To smite me with.

All I could do was fall

To my knees, my torso bent

So my head touched the ground

While my hands covered my eyes

Preventing my tears from mixing

With your storm.

For the first time, I prayed.
